The start of your day begins with a pick up from the Las Terrazas Resort dock, where your intriguing tour of the Maya civilization begins! Once onboard, enjoy a delightful continental breakfast as you make your way through the Northern River where you will see a wide variety of flora and fauna. Shortly you arrive at Bomba Village where you will board a private air-conditioned van that will take you along the Old Pan American Highway to Tower Hill. Here you will once again board another boat that will take you down the winding New River Lagoon for forty-five minutes; where Belizean wildlife at its best comes alive. Encounter the many species of birds, monkeys, crocodiles, interesting plant life, and culture as you pass the Amish and Mestizo communities along the way. Xunantunich Maya Ruins/Zoo:
Leave by boat to the town of San Pedro, take a flight to Belize City, then board a van and off you go to the western part of the country. Along the way view the different communities along the Western Highway. Xunantunich is the second largest site in the country. El Casatillo is its highest temple at one hundred thirty feet and overlooks the Guatemalan countryside along with the Belize River Valley. After exploring this fascinating Mayan world, head back to San Ignacio and enjoy a Belizean lunch in one of the local restaurants. Once lunch is over, you will continue your journey and visit the Belize Zoo where you will see many of the different endangered species of Belize including five different species of wild cats, howler monkeys, the keel-billed toucan, the Belize national bird, and many more. Take a tour with us as we unveil the mysteries and secrets of the Maya underworld. Witness spectacular visions of the jungle, while trekking across rivers and remote jungle trails. We will take you back over two thousand years in history as you learn about the Maya civilization and witness first hand how the ancient peoples used these amazing caverns. See burial chambers with calcified remains, ceremonial vessels and other cultural artifacts left by the Maya centuries ago. Artifacts are often looted from caves following their discovery. Because of this, passage through this cave is known to only a few select guides, who have permission from the Belize Department of Archeology to take visitors to this special cave. To this day, the cave has not been looted and nearly all of the cultural artifacts have remained in place as they were originally found in 1989. Start off the day with an early flight to Belize City to meet and greet your tour guide. Travel the scenic western highway towards Guatemala to the village of Teakettle. From there, head south to the Tapir Mountain Nature. Take a nature trail for forty-five minutes on a flat, clean, and shaded path which has three knee-deep streams to cross during this jungle hike. At the end of the hike arrive at the camp ground just outside the cave. Sit down for lunch and orientation about the history, geology, safety rules, and regulations of the cave. After the orientation and lunch start off with a swim into the fifteen foot long and fifteen foot deep cave; life jackets are available for non-swimmers. Arrive to the main chamber to view artifacts such as ancient Mayan potteries, skeletal remains, stone tools, and beautiful formations. Cave time is approximately 3 hours. - At the end of the tour you will hike back to the car, drive to Belize City, fly to San Pedro and boat back to Las Terrazas, concluding at approximately 5:30 pm.
