3 Reasons to Add Belize to Your Bucket List
The number one item on my bucket list was to become a certified SCUBA diver. So, when I was invited on a once in a lifetime trip to Ambergris Caye & the Blue Hole in Belize, I finally made the decision to check it off my list. My friends and I started planning our trip 4 months in advance, which gave me enough time to certify near my home in Utah. However, I saw dozens of people become SCUBA certified right in Belize, which might have been a little more fun than our local swimming pool.
Not knowing if I'd ever be back to the island, I wanted to take advantage of everything I could. I've put together a short list of the top 3 things I was able to experience in Belize.

# 1 - Daily SCUBA diving

The unique thing about Ambergris Caye as a diving destination is the ease of diving right from the hotel. At Las Terrazas Resort & Residences, we could wake up early every morning and walk right out of our hotel and down to the dock where our dive boat would be waiting for us. We'd depart at 6 am, dive for 2 hours, and then come back to the beachfront hotel and chill on the beach for a while and then head back out again around 11 am. Once we were back, we were exhausted! We'd spend a few hours eating and hanging out at the pool relaxing. We did this for 6 days straight, and it never got old! I could have done it for the rest of my life. The water was clear blue, and the ocean life was amazing. Our guide took great care of us, and I felt completely safe even with reef sharks close by.

#2 - Visiting the Blue Hole

The main purpose of our trip was to visit the Blue Hole, which is a 130 ft. dive meant for divers with an Advanced Diver Certification. Even though this was my first dive trip, I felt very comfortable and safe after a few days of diving 30-60 ft deep. My group decided to take the 2.5-hour boat ride to the Blue Hole during the middle of our trip so that we had time to re-acclimate our bodies. The ride from the hotel to the Blue Hole was extremely bumpy and not recommended for anyone that gets seasick. However, if you can handle the boat ride, the dive itself is worth it! We saw three bull sharks, but they left us alone, and even the 16-year-olds in our group were able to stay calm.

#3 - The island of Ambergris Caye

Our small 6-passenger plane landed at the small open air airport, and we easily grabbed a taxi to our Ambergris Caye accommodations, Las Terrazas Resort. The ride from the airport was about 20 minutes. Once at the beachfront hotel, if we wanted to go into downtown San Pedro, where the airport was, we could easily take the water taxi or resort golf cart into town each night for dinner. At night we would go shopping or eat seafood at the local restaurants. We could also hang out at the local bars or watch the chicken drop (yes, that's a thing!). The simple life of the people on the island of Ambergris Caye was enlightening. I can tell you that diving each day kept us heading to bed early every night and so having a huge nightlife was not something my group cared about.
