I had always dreamed of a tropical destination wedding. A vacation with friends and family and the postcard-esque water in the background? Yes, please! Thankfully, Blair had always wanted the same thing and was so excited to find our destination wedding location. Costa Rica? Mexico? Bahamas? All on the top of our list. One day, Blair said, "What about Belize?" Me, being the one who never payed attention to geography, said, "Where's Belize?" After getting our hands on a good ol' copy of Lonely Planet "BELIZE," I quickly regretted never paying attention to this beautiful country.
Swimming with nurse sharks, sea turtles, exploring ancient Mayan ruins, and swimming in the crystal blue Caribbean water? YES YES YES. So off we went on an unforgettable spring break in April 2017, where we decided on our dream tropical destination wedding location - Ambergris Caye, Belize.
I remember seeing a sea turtle for the first time swim right by me and a starfish as big as my head. We would paddle out from the resort to the crystal clear blue-greenish water and jump off to go for a warm swim. We ate fresh conch fritters for lunch and drank delicious Belikins to quench our thirst.
We found local spots inviting and welcoming. We were welcomed to enter a corn hole tournament at The Truck Stop and quickly made new friends with locals. We loved visiting the local shops and drove a golf cart all around the town. We always felt safe, welcomed and fell more in love with beautiful Ambergris Caye each day.
There was one little hiccup in the trip, but it was also the moment I was sold on Belize, so it's worth sharing. I ended up having one too many pina coladas at the Lazy Lizard on Caye Caulker (just a boat ride away from San Pedro). We took a snorkeling trip that day, and I realized that I left my bag (with my passport and all kinds of goods) on Caye Caulker just as we were pulling into dock on Ambergris Caye. I was frantic, and my husband was confronting me with, "Who brings their passport on a snorkeling cruise anyway!?" (Tip #1- don't do that).
After at least an hour of my mania and a couple of locals calling friends they knew on Caye Caulker, we were somehow able to get in touch with someone who found my bag! Someone found it at the Lazy Lizard (probably next to a few empty pina coladas) and turned it into the bar manager. Well, that's when I officially knew. This island isn't just made up of wonderful views, drinks, and food. It's also habited by wonderful, kind people. I was so thankful and so in love with this place.
So after the nurse sharks, sea turtle sightings, delicious Belikins, exciting snorkeling trips, and an almost-lost passport, we decided Ambergris Caye, Belize, had to be the place we were going to say our vows in the sand to each other. We couldn't wait to tell our friends and family they were all about to go on an unforgettable vacation! Book Right Now at Las Terrazas!
