Holy Cross Anglican Primary School is located on the beautiful island of Ambergris Caye, Belize and has become a primary initiative for the entire staff as well as friends of the resort. Founded in September 2006, this school educates 440 students from preschool to Standard 6 (8th grade). The school was founded in 2006 by Francis and Vernon Wilson, two missionaries from Virginia, USA who were working in Belize City. They saw the incredible need for a new school in San Pedro – the existing schools were full and over crowded – and, unlike many who would have just felt sad about the need, they did something about it. In just five years they took a muddy lagoon and turned it into the school building that is there today.
This Is Not Your Typical School And Is Different In The Following Ways
Holy Cross School is located in – and draws many of its students from – the incredibly poor neighborhood of San Mateo, which at one time won the dubious honor of being recognized as the most at risk community in all of Belize by the Red Cross. Risk of hurricane, risk or fire or risk or disease. This means many of the school’s families face incredible need and, though hard working, often struggle to provide the necessities for their children.
Holy Cross School does not just provide an education, the school seeks to provide an excellent education that meets the needs of the modern world. The school has a computer lab, a well stocked library and strive to provide excellent resources for its’ teachers. The school also provides for the health of its’ students, by providing a nutritious lunch, dental care and volunteer doctors. Finally, for those who cannot afford their own, the school provide the pencils, paper, shoes and more so they can attend school.
The School Embraces Visitors & Volunteers
What Holy Cross School has to offer is because it was given to them first. Therefore, they rely heavily on donations . The school was built and is maintained by volunteers and many of the school supplies that they provide to their students were donated by visiting families and individuals. So if you are coming to the island please contact Holy Cross School to arrange a visit. They would love to meet you.
Las Terrazas Resort welcomes and will facilitate donations or volunteer work at the school. We are also members of www.packforapurpose.org, which enables guests to support the local school with specific supplies.
